This past week, Deanna G. Taylor (DGTA)Academy acknowledged Red Ribbon Week with a few special activities and events! 6th-grade students participated in the door-decorating contest picking two movies (Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Hocus Pocus) to acknowledge the "Life is a Movie, Film Drug Free" theme. Scholars also partook in an essay writing contest! DGTA's National Elementary Honor Society students worked together for their Plant a Promise Service Project, in which they planted 100 red tulip bulbs that will bloom in the spring and serve as a physical reminder of the beauty of a drug-free life! Scholars were also treated to an exciting visit from our friendly neighborhood Spiderman, who visited for a school-wide Red Ribbon assembly in which students were taught about the history of Red Ribbon Week and reminded of the importance of living drug-free! #hillsidenj #hillsidepublicschools #redribbonweek #redribbon #drugfree #spiderman #newpride #newpathways #newpossibilities

On Thursday, October 17th, 2024, Coastal Wilds’s mobile exotic animal education program (@coastalwilds) visited Deanna G. Taylor Academy! Scholars were able to hear about getting involved with natural wildlife while getting an up-close and personal experience with the different kinds of animals. The Girls Rock Science Club at Deanna G. Taylor Academy encourages teamwork and problem-solving through exciting hands-on STEM activities. In this recent classroom session, students worked collaboratively to manipulate red plastic cups using strings and rubber bands - likely as part of an engaging engineering challenge. The lively environment promotes active learning, with students visibly engaged in the project. Various materials, such as worksheets and containers, can be seen on the tables, suggesting a dynamic, project-based approach to science education. Activities like these at the Girls Rock Science Club help develop critical 21st-century skills among young learners, empowering them to explore the wonders of science, technology, engineering, and math! This year, Deanna G. Taylor Academy (DGTA) acknowledged World Mental Health Day (Thursday, October 10th) with a Gratitude Wall! DGTA school social worker, Ms. Brennan went into each classroom to engage the students in conversation about World Mental Health Day, and to teach the skill of practicing gratitude each day! Each student shared one person, place, thing, etc. that they were grateful for and wrote it on a Post-It note. On October 2nd, Deanna G. Taylor Academy held a Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration for families! The Estilo Latino Dance Company engaged families with Salsa and Bachata lessons.
